This Competition is open to singers of all nationalites and voice types, between the ages of 18 and 32. The goal of the competition is to attract outstanding young artists from all around the world.

Guidelines :

The Competition has two categories :

A. OPERAS
B. OPERETTES

- After viewing an applicant’s CV the organisers reserve the right to accept or refuse an application according to professional experience and education.
- All candidates, prize-winners or not, will be considered for future projects at Marseille Opera House or Theatre de l’Odeon. The list of prize-winners will be widely circulated and all members of the jury are likely to propose contracts to the candidates, or help for their promotion.

The organisers are free to disseminate photographs and audio/visual material of the whole competition online without compensating the candidates.

How to apply

A non-refundable application fee of 35 euros is required of each candidate.
The candidates must provide the following information :

- résumé / CV
- 2 photographs
- photocopy an ID document with proof of age (ID card or passport)
- payment of application fee by cheque to “trésor public”
- registration form (including anticipated repertoire)
- bank account identification (IBAN)

Notifications will be sent as soon as the registration is completed.

The jury reserved the right to disqualify arias that are not applicable to the repertory of the chosen categories; in this eventuality, the candidate is given the chance to replace the aria.

Pianists

Several pianists will be provided by the organisers at no fee to the candidates. With an eye to ensuring fairness, each candidates will have a different pianist for each phase of the competition. Each candidate is permitted to provide their own pianist if they choose, and this information must be indicated at the time of registration.
The organisers will not arrange rehearsals with the pianists of the competition. When presenting a contemporary or rare aria, the candidate should provide a score for the jury.
We recommend that the candidates send scores of all repertoire to the theatre that we may provide them to the competition pianists in advance. These scores will be returned.

 

Competition rules

Candidates may register in one or both categories  (one registration per category):

A. OPERA
B. OPERETTA

 

Candidates may not present the same aria twice.
Category A : Transposition or translation is not permitted.
Prepare 5 operas arias including 2 in French.


Category B : Prepare 5 operetta arias including 2 in French.

All finalists must present at least one French aria, in the course of the competition.
Each aria must be presented for memory.
The jury’s deliberations are private and decisions are final.
The competition will consist of three rounds: preliminaries, semifinal, ant the finale.

- Prior to each event, each candidate must present their candidacy card.
- Performance order will be decided in a blind draw and will be consistent through the competition. The candidates should be attentive to their schedule: should a candidate be tardy he may be disqualified.

Candidates will be judged according to vocal quality, musicality, presentation and interpretation. A simple, professional outfit will be accepted for the preliminaries and semifinal.
- For the finale, gala attire is required.
- The winners will receive a prize and a certificate. All other finalists will receive a certificate.
- Candidates who do not reach the finale will receive, on request, a participation certificate specifying the competition round that they have reached.
- By enrolling in the competition candidates accept the rules and regulations set forth in these materials.

Schedule of the Competition

Preliminary rounds on June 7th and 8th, 2017
WEDNESDAY 7 OF JUNE 2017 – Théâtre de l'Odéon
10 am : Registration of the candidates
2 pm : Beginning of the preliminaries

- Performance of an aria chosen by the candidate
- Maximum duration of an aria : 4 minutes
- The preliminaries will enable the jury to discern vocal and interpretive quality.
- The jury that the candidates pay special attention to the time limit of 4 minutes, and reserves the right to stop any performance that exceeds this length.

THURSDAY 8 OF JUNE 2017 – Théâtre de l'Odéon
2 pm : preliminaries

Results will be posted after jury deliberations at the conclusion of the preliminary rounds.

FRIDAY 9 OF JUNE 2017 – Théâtre de l'Odéon
8 pm : SEMIFINAL

- Performance of an aria chosen by the candidate
- Maximum duration of an aria : 6 minutes maximum
- A second aria may be requested by the jury
Results will be posted after jury deliberations at the conclusion of the semifinal.

SATURDAY 10 OF JUNE 2017 – Opéra de Marseille
8 pm : FINALE

- Performance of an aria chosen by the candidate, chosen from the list of arias that the candidate has not yet presented
- A second aria will be chosen by the jury, from the list of arias that the candidate has not yet presented
- In the case that the finale includes more then 10 singers, the jury reserves the right to hear only one aria. In this case, the jury will select the aria.
- Maximum duration of an aria : 6 - 8 minutes maximum.
Results will be announced at an evening awards ceremony on the day of the finale.

Prize and awards :

Marseille Opera Competition will give the following awards :

Category A - Opera :
1rst prize - 2000€
2nd prize - 1000€

Category B - Operetta
1rst prize - 2000€
2nd prize - 1000€

Grand Prix : 5000€
Audience award : 1500€
Special mention from the jury / Young Hope Prize (for an artist under the age of 22) : 500€

Compensation for the finalists :

All the candidates chosen for the finale will receive a fee of 150€ toward the cost of their stay.
Comments :
If one prize is awarded to two candidates, the monetary amount of said prize will be split equally.
One candidate can be awarded multiple prizes.
The payment of the prizes will be executed by administrative remit, according to the deadline of public accounting, authorized by law.

 

Legal disputes :

Only the jury is authorized to make decisions pertaining to any problems related to the organization of the competition, that are not clarified in these materials; in this case, decisions are final.
